Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect when volunteering with Urban Homeworks?

  • A friendly, knowledgeable crew leader that will assist you and answer your questions.
  • A worksite that is prepared for your work project.
  • A workday that starts at 8 am and will be wrapped up by 4 pm. There is a lunch break around noon. Urban Homeworks does NOT provide lunch.
  • The day will start with an orientation of the site and scope of work, as well as a safety overview.
  • During a work break, the mission of Urban Homeworks will be discussed along with your connection, as volunteers, to the work being done in the community.

 

Is there an age limit for volunteering?

Yes, all volunteers must be 16 years or older.

 

Why is there an age requirement for volunteering? 

Unfortunately, due to insurance and liability reasons as well as for safety reasons, we cannot have youth under the age of 16 on our work sites.

 

What does a typical work day timeline look like?

The day starts at 8 am, lunch break in the middle of the day, and wrap up by 4 pm.

 

Is lunch provided?

No, Urban Homeworks does not provide lunch for groups.  Please coordinate plans before coming on-site.  Everyone can bring their own bag lunch, or you can venture out to a local restaurant.  We encourage you to bring your own lunch to save time and allow adequate time to have a conversation about what Urban Homeworks is up to in the neighborhood!

 

Do I need construction experience to volunteer?

NO! No construction experience is necessary to work on our sites. Our main desire is to have volunteers who are excited about working and have a willingness to learn. We do also love to have skilled volunteers, just be sure to let us know so we can prepare ahead of time.

 

What should I wear?

Wear construction-appropriate clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.  Come prepared to work outside, whether hot or cold.  No loose-fitting clothes or open-toed footwear.  Work boots are encouraged.

 

What tools do I need to bring when volunteering?

None! Urban Homeworks will provide all the task-appropriate tools for the volunteer day. You are welcome to bring your own hand tools and/or tool belt; however, Urban Homeworks is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen personal tools. Please do not bring any personal power tools on-site.

 

Why does Urban Homeworks ask for $300 for each workday?

We ask with sincere hearts for you to partner with us in turning houses into homes. We understand you are already giving of your time, and that has some costs on our end. We have to pay the crew leaders who are out there with you, tools and materials are expensive, and it is also a way to keep our housing affordable for the families that will move into our units. We greatly appreciate anything you are able to give.

 

Does Urban Homeworks provide lodging for volunteer groups?

No, Urban Homeworks does not provide any sort of lodging for volunteers, BUT we do have partners that provide lodging. Contact us for more information about where to find lodging.

 

How far in advance do I need to contact Urban Homeworks about volunteering?

We advise that you contact us at least two months prior to the date you wish to volunteer. This will increase your chances of getting the volunteer date that you want and gives us more time to work out all necessary details. We schedule workdays on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t miss out!

 

Does Urban Homeworks accept individual volunteers?

Yes, but we will ask that you join another group already scheduled to come out and volunteer.
